The Omegas of Spartanburg are working to save a building of immense historical and cultural value: the Dean Street School, now known as the Omegas of Spartanburg Uplift Center.
π Dean Street School
312 N. Dean Street, Spartanburg, SC
Established in 1883, this was the first public school for Black students in Spartanburg.
The first principal was Rev. C.C. Scott, pastor of Silver Hill Methodist Church.
He was succeeded by R.M. Alexander, who served for more than 30 years.
Before Mary H. Wright School opened in the early 1900s, this was one of the few options for Black students.
In 1939, the school was remodeled with brick veneer and renamed Alexander School.
Today, the building still stands β a rare and powerful symbol of resilience and education.
