πŸ“ Dean Street School

312 N. Dean Street, Spartanburg, SC

  • Established in 1883, this was the first public school for Black students in Spartanburg.

  • The first principal was Rev. C.C. Scott, pastor of Silver Hill Methodist Church.

  • He was succeeded by R.M. Alexander, who served for more than 30 years.

  • Before Mary H. Wright School opened in the early 1900s, this was one of the few options for Black students.

  • In 1939, the school was remodeled with brick veneer and renamed Alexander School.

  • Today, the building still stands β€” a rare and powerful symbol of resilience and education.
